The completion of Forest Management Plans (FMPs) is a legal requirement for Forest Management Agreement (FMA) holders in Alberta. FMPs detail where, when, and how trees will be harvested to ensure sustainability of timber and non-timber values. FMA holders in Alberta must develop an FMP every 10 years, demonstrating sustainability over a 200 year time frame - a representation of two full life cycles, or "rotations", for most Alberta tree species. The creation of an FMP is a multi-year process, involving industry, government, technical consultants, public stakeholders, First Nations, and Métis Communities. The creation of FMPs is a multiyear process, typically taking a minimum of 3 years.
